We have completely restyled our website www.connectingdiaspora.org, aimed at diaspora involvement to countries of origin. Many diaspora living and working in the Netherlands remain strongly connected to their old country.
On 22 April 2020 the first of its kind Global Diaspora Virtual Exchange on Response to COVID-19 took place bringing together diaspora groups and individuals from around the globe. The event page can be found here: https://idiaspora.org/event-calendar/global-diaspora-virtual-exchange-response-covid-19.
As of 17 April, confirmed cases globally surpassed 2 million, with over 135,000 deaths, since the outbreak began. Confirmed cases have been reported in more than 200 countries/territories/areas, with new cases and countries reporting daily. With the rapid increase in the global number of cases, global mobility restrictions have been extended and strengthened.
Since the COVID-19 outbreak began, as of 10 April, more than 1.4 million cases and over 85,000 deaths have been reported globally. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced most border points to limit crossings to essential travel only, resulting in a near global international mobility deadlock. As of 9 April, almost 46,000 restrictions to mobility have been put into effect by governments and authorities worldwide, a marginal increase from the 45,427 measures that had been issued as of 6 April.
Since the outbreak began, as of 7 April, more than 1.2 million cases and over 67,000 deaths have been reported in more than 200 countries/territories/areas, with new cases and countries reporting daily. As of 6 April 2020, a total of 45,427 restrictions and measures have been issued by governments and authorities in 194 countries, territories and areas since the COVID-19 global mobility restrictions monitoring began.
Migrants and diaspora communities are recognized for their invaluable role in society due to their rich cultural contributions, diverse voices, and their economic contributions to the countries they live in and come from, including philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and innovations. iDiaspora provides a platform to share your voice, to gain knowledge, and to engage with the global community committed to the importance of diaspora.
Diaspora engagement has to potential to become a practice of choice for the public and private sector. We need to narrow the gaps in connectivity, knowledge and opportunity between these sectors to realize this potential. I sense iDiaspora is an important step-change in this journey and is a platform I look forward to seeing flourish.
